SMD LED's
SMD LEDs belong to the smallest light sources in LED technology. SMD stands for „surface-mounted-device“. That are small construction elements mountable on a component’s surface. Instead of wire connections these special light-emitting diodes are directly soldered on a circuit board with their connecting surfaces. The housing serves as cooling element. The small LED components are available with SMD LED board, but quite often without printed circuit board as well. Further variants are SMDs with diffuse or water-clear lens, as well as 3-Chip SMD LEDs. This SMD type contains three light chips within in one LED. The three light chips can have the same light colour, for example in white SMD LEDs, or three different colours. Mostly, tricolor SMD LEDs consist of one red-, one green- and one blue-shining chip and are also known as RGB SMD LEDs. Besides, there are bicolor SMD LEDs available as well.
What makes the tiny LED-construction elements that functional
Due to minimum dimensions SMD LEDs are extremely space-saving. The smallest ones beyond the SMD LEDs without PC board are just 1,6mm in length and 0,8mm in breadth at a heigth of 0,68mm. Even the 5,5 x 5mm SMD types are only a few bigger. However they still belong to the midgets beyond the light diodes. Also in terms of power consumption the Micro SMD LEDs restrain themselves a lot. At a required current of only 20mA up to 100mA they are well suited as light source for battery operated devices. One single SMD LED-Chip generates about 10 up to 20lm light. Extremely bright variants with 0,5 watt create approximately 50lm brightness while requiring up to 150mA constant current. If you use LEDs with 3 light chips, brightness or light colour can be determined, because each chip is controllable separately via one of the three poles. For that reason, SMD LEDs are appropriate for implementing individual handicrafts or repair work in model construction or in modification of speedo or cockpit backlighting. For instance, they allow individual adaptations like a certain colour of speedo lighting. SMD LEDs are also employed as spare part for LED spot lights. For skillful hands replacement of single defect SMD LEDs is less expensive than to buy a whole new device. Thanks to colourful SMD LEDs the pointer illumination in a car’s cockpit or the lighting of instrument clusters shines in a new or another light, like blue.
Spare part, instrument lighting, model train lights - SMD LEDs are fit for anything
Besides modifying speedo backlight, repairing the r.p.m. counter’s lighting or exchanging instrument clusters‘ lights, SMD LEDs are often used as LED-background lighting in backlit LCD-monitors. SMD LEDs are also popular in order to light up model vehicles, to repair speedo lighting or to replace pointer illumination. With the help of SMDs signage, billboards and information boards can be designed and illuminated exactly according to customer requests. Not at least SMD LEDs are employed in machine loading for serial production. There are almost no limits for further possible applications of these practical and flexible miniatur light sources.
