Light bulb with G4 socket

Light bulbs with a G4 base resemble traditional plugs and have two pins for connecting the lamp. With a G4 base, the distance between the two pins is 4 millimeters. These bases were originally designed for halogen lamps and, due to their small size, were used almost everywhere – in table and desk lamps, extractor hoods, under-cabinet lights, and much more. However, since halogen lamps have a reduced light spectrum and are also less efficient, they can be replaced with LED spotlights with a G4 base. It is important to pay attention to the design and dimensions of the lamps, as not every spotlight with a G4 base will fit every G4 lamp: space is limited, for example, by the reflector. The design of the spotlight should also be considered, as LEDs, unlike halogen spotlights, emit light in a more focused manner and do not radiate light all around. Therefore, there are many LED spotlights with a G4 base that have side-mounted base pins and models where the pins are soldered to the back.

What is a G4 base and why LED is the better choice

LEDs with G4 bases represent a long-lasting and energy-efficient alternative to conventional halogen bulbs, particularly in desk or ceiling lamps. Depending on the number of diodes installed, they provide very bright, daylight-like or pleasantly soft light. Wide-beam models prevent shadows and are very similar to the light of classic halogen bulbs. Many G4 LEDs are coated or encapsulated in silicone, which provides additional protection against accidental contact. Versions with less wide-beam diodes appear somewhat dimmer and are particularly suitable for diffused or indirect light. The bulbs are available in various shapes, including plate-shaped and cylindrical pin-base bulbs. The G4 base itself is a low-voltage plug-in base (12 volts), is characterized by its compact design with two pins spaced 4 mm apart, and is frequently used in decorative lighting, furniture, extractor hoods, and mobile homes. The trend is increasingly moving away from halogen lamps towards LED lamps – with advantages such as low power consumption, minimal heat generation and a significantly longer service life.

Versatile applications for G4 LED bulbs

LED bulbs with G4 bases are ideal for places where space is limited but a reliable light source is needed. Whether in kitchen under-cabinet lighting, display cabinets, shelves, wardrobes, extractor hoods, or in caravans – G4 LEDs provide efficient and even illumination. They particularly demonstrate their strengths in furniture and accent lighting: They are compact, durable, and generate hardly any heat, thus protecting even sensitive surfaces. These modern bulbs are available in various light colors – from cozy warm white (approx. 2700K) for atmospheric lighting to neutral white light (4000K) for clearer visibility. Many models are dimmable and can be easily integrated into existing 12V systems. The simple 1:1 replacement for conventional halogen G4 bulbs makes switching to LED particularly straightforward – for more comfortable lighting with significantly lower energy consumption.
